The day finally came!!! After our fire lesson with Maisy about a month ago, I decided to try to visit a fire house in Berkeley. I called the BFD to set up a visit for Maisy and they asked how many kids I wanted to bring and was it a school....so I then put it out there for Maisy's school-mates and our friends. I had to submit a request via phone with the BFD and they got back to me two weeks later that we were approved for our visit! We visited the very nice firefighters at Station #2 in Berkeley on Berkeley Way. Of course I forgot my nice camera, so all of the photos were taken with my iPhone.
All of the 3 and 4 year olds and their siblings were wonderfully behaved and were very into the short half hour presentation.
They had the kids all sit in front of the ladder truck and they did a demonstration on how they put on their gear and why they put on their gear. They helped the kids to remember to call 911 if there is ever an emergency and that firefighters are safe people to go to in an emergecy. They also reminded the kids to go home and have all their parents check their smoke detectors.
They then let all the kids get up into a fire engine and walk through. The firefighters were very friendly and asked the kids to always wave to them whenever they drive by!
We were going to tour the ambulance, but right as we were about to move on to the ambulance the firehouse got a medical call. So we got to watch the firefighters get in their ambulance with their lights on to go out on a call!
At the end, all of the kids got sticker badges and fire hats. The kids all had a great time! I think some of the parents (me included) were just as excited if not MORE excited than the kids to be there!
