Six Things to do With Kids at UC Berkeley

Six Things to do With Kids at UC Berkeley

We love taking our kids up to the UC Berkeley Campus. It’s where I went to school and I get a little wistful when they exclaim that they’d like to go to that school too when they grow up!  We like to show off the campus so they feel comfortable with universities and they don’t seem so scary and big.  We want to show that universities are actually fun and exciting places where you can learn, adventure and picnic!  Here are our top 6 things to do with our kids at Cal.

Drive Thru Tree- Our VW Minivan Fit!

Drive Thru Tree- Our VW Minivan Fit!

The Drive-Thru Tree, named the Chandelier Tree, is a pretty cool pit stop if you happen to be up in Northern California. Luckily it was only a few miles away from Big Bend Lodge, where we were camping a few weeks back and we took this fun side trip.  Heads up, it’s $5 entrance fee- cash only. Thankfully we were with friends, who floated us a little loan, since we pretty much never carry cash.

The car thru the trunk was all fun and games at first, then the fit got really tight. Then I started feeling really hot, and a bit nervous and kinda sweaty. With fantastic guidance (Todd was out of the car gesturing wildly) we made it though without a scratch or a splinter and I could breathe again! It was a pretty fun accomplishment. The girls thought it was amazing!

Camping With Families- Big Bend Lodge, CA

Camping With Families- Big Bend Lodge, CA

We had an amazing “camping” trip at the Big Bend Lodge on the Eel River in Leggett, CA a little over 3 hours north of the Bay Area.  I say “camping” because they have little two room cabins you rent to stay there.  It’s ideal for families and even more ideal for groups.  We recently stayed with a group of six families.  The adults had a fantastic time as did the kids.  The lovliness of real beds and kitchens with refrigerators made the trip a breeze.  An added bonus is that you can bring your puppy along for the trip.

How to Pick the Lodging That Works For You and the Kids

How to Pick the Lodging That Works For You and the Kids

This is our last in our series about travel to Kona, Hawaii.  We travel often and stay in a variety of accommodations.  We rent vacation homes through VBRO or other similar websites. We stay in hotels, timeshares, or hotel/condominiums/resorts (with kitchens and separate rooms and living quarters).  This time we rented a large house in Kailua-Kona through VBRO with Todd’s family.  It was wonderful to have us all under one roof, with plenty of room for us to spread out and enjoy our time there.

By far our favorite way to stay is renting a home or staying in a hotel/condominium/resort.  The two are very different, and both have their pluses and minuses.
