We had the up close and personal ranch experience in conjunction with a grilling course. Stemple Creek Ranch is located in Tomales, CA nestled in rolling hills of green a mere four miles from the Pacific Ocean, complete with a creek, Stemple Creek, now a nature preserve running right through the middle of it. This is what that "Happy Cow" stuff is all about. They raise all natural grass fed beef and lamb. The Local Butcher shop is located in Berkeley, CA and sells Stemple Creek's beef. The Local Butcher Shop focuses on offering sustainably raised local meat from only farmers and ranchers within 150 miles of Berkeley. The two came together last Sunday, May 5, 2013, when the The Local Butcher Shop gave a grilling course at Stemple Creek Ranch.
It was a very unique experience, touring the family owned and operated ranch est. 1902, from the newest generation of ranchers (husband, wife and two adorably cute daughters), seeing the cattle, learning how they are raised, then after "the cattle's only one very bad worst day" becoming delicious, sustainably, locally grown, healthy food. This is where the Local Butcher Shop stepped in and gave a lesson in grilling.
We all left with two steaks, a roast and ground beef from the Ranch to try at home. So far we are two for two on delicious grilling at home. We've been lucky enough to have plenty to share with friends and family for hosted meals together.
More than just having this very unique experience of knowing EXACTLY where your food is coming from (over that fence!), it was fun to get out and explore doing something new with only Todd! It was great to spend the day away from parenting to just be us and be excited and into learning something new. Furthermore, it's completely changed the way I am thinking about food and where it comes from and who I want to support with my purchase. I love the thought, care and meaning of buying locally. If you get a chance, check Stemple Creek Ranch and the Local Butcher Shop out!
