Encourage Writing: Kids can write the president too

Encourage writing. Follow their lead, if it leads to wanting to write the president, why not?

My 5 year old, Maisy, is learning to write and we encourage her to do so and write however she can figure to spell the words to communicate.  She’s thrilled with herself when she can put letters on paper and someone else can “read” it.

All on her own, she came down after quiet time with a letter she had started for President Obama.  She was feeling quite patriotic and wanted to write the president to tell him that she loved him for being her president ever since she was a baby.

"I love you Obama.  I think you do the best for us.  Love, Maisy"  Seriously came up with the idea all on her own.  We pretty much don't talk politics around here.

"I love you sdat"  sdat= state.  She drew a picture of a fancy president's chair for him as well, so if he wants to build it for his office he can.  She also chose to pose this way and to wave hello to the president.

Right after she finished writing the letter, we addressed it to the president at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20500.

Maisy drew him a couple of pictures, finished it off with a little note and then wanted to mail it to him at the White House, since we couldn’t just pop over and drop it off in person and we did just that.

Encourage and foster interest in your kids. Why not write the president?

Whether you like him or not, I thought it was pretty interesting and fun that Maisy wanted to write a letter to our president.  Early start to getting involved, reaching out, practicing writing and expressing gratitude.  Way to go Maisy.  Todd and I are now curious to see if he’ll write back.  A president for a pen pal anyone?

UPDATE:  About a month later, he wrote BACK! Maisy was very proud and is highly protective of her special letter.

I'm a part-time work from home, full time stay at home mom to two daughters and an Australian Labradoodle puppy. We are enjoying our last year before big girl school, playing with friends, swapping childcare to get the job done and getting crafty when we can fit it in. We live together in a wonderful community that we are truly thankful for and proud to be a part of. It takes a village and this is ours.
